Container emergency! Multiple freight forwarders: Increased shortages are seriously affecting supply! Almost all shipping lines are facing shortages of empty containers

Freight forwarders report that containers are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain in North China. This trend is largely attributed to unusually strong demand in the market as well as a decline in vessel capacity as a result of the Red Sea crisis, which in turn has created a double shortage of vessels and containers.

Hans-Henrik Nielson, CargoGulf's Director of Global Development, makes it clear: "The shortage of 40HQ in China is so severe that we are facing a depletion of supply." He further explains, "Containers are almost full again and leaving before they arrive in China, Malaysian ports (or Singapore), and this frequent port hopping and port congestion creates a major headache for equipment planning. It is by no means an exaggeration to say that we are in a tight scramble every week."

Ligentia also confirmed the shortage, noting that "Empty container inventories, especially in North China, are very tight and are changing on a daily basis depending on vessel arrivals and empty container discharges." The company specifically mentioned that in the port of Shanghai, "almost all carriers are facing shortages of empty containers, especially CMA and ANL," and that, in addition, due to congestion in the port, the waiting time for ships at the port has been extended to between three and 14 days, resulting in delays in flights becoming the norm.

Ligentia also observed that carriers are struggling to obtain containers at several Chinese ports, such as Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd at Yantian port, COSCO Shipping, HMM, Hapag-Lloyd and MSC at Ningbo port, Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk at Tianjin port, and COSCO Shipping and Duffy Line at Qingdao port. However, the port of Xiamen is in relatively good shape with sufficient container supply.

The current market remains strong and carriers are becoming more selective in their bookings. Some shippers are seeking additional quotes from carriers in response to a potential surplus of freight in the coming months. Meanwhile, carriers have announced plans for a blank sailing in June, which will result in a significant reduction in capacity of 15-20 per cent, further exacerbating weekly capacity volatility.
