Crazy! Shipping company announces price increase in August!

According to relevant statistics, the number of maritime attacks launched by the Houthis on merchant ships last month hit a record high this year. In July, the Houthis launched multiple attacks on ports and cargo ships again, and the Red Sea crisis still shows no signs of stopping. At the same time, many shipping companies announced price increases for August.

Freight rates increased by another 2,000 yuan in August

As soon as July began, some well-known shipping companies began to announce a freight rate increase on August 1, with a 40-foot container price increase of up to 2,000 US dollars.

According to Taiwanese media reports, many well-known shipping companies, including Yang Ming Marine Transport and ZIM Shipping, issued notices to customers on July 2, announcing that starting from August 1, they will charge GRI (General Rate Surcharge) for containerized goods shipped from the Far East to North America.

Specifically, an additional fee of US$1,800 will be charged for each 20-foot standard container (TEU), and an additional fee of US$2,000 will be charged for each 40-foot high container (FEU). The increase reflects that the shipping industry is optimistic about the third quarter shipping market.

The news also shows that shipping giant Maersk said on July 1 that the next few months will be challenging for shipping companies and businesses because the disruption of container transportation through the Red Sea will continue until the third quarter of this year.

Earlier, Yang Ming also released a positive signal at the end of June. The third quarter entered the traditional peak season in Europe and the United States, and the shipping industry ships were fully operational, supporting the rise in freight rates. Industry insiders pointed out that Yang Ming also plans to adjust the peak season surcharge for direct customers again on July 15, which is expected to increase significantly from US$600 per large container to US$1,800-2,000 to keep in line with the strategy of the leading shipping companies.

Yang Ming Marine Transport said that the company has reported the price increase plan for the European and American routes on July 15 and August 1, but emphasized that the actual increase will be flexibly adjusted according to market dynamics.

Analysts believe that given the large number of overtime ships and new routes on the US West Coast route, subsequent freight rates may loosen.

The US East Coast route faces a high and continuous upward pressure. Whether the increase of USD 2,000 per LCL can be successfully achieved on August 1st remains to be verified over time.

Houthis attack multiple cargo ships again

According to CCTV News, on July 1, local time, Yemeni Houthi armed military spokesman Yahya Saraiya issued a statement saying that the Houthis carried out four attacks that day.

The attacks targeted the MSC Unific ship in the Arabian Sea, the Delonix US tanker in the Red Sea, the Anvil Point British ship in the Indian Ocean, and the Lucky Sailor ship in the Mediterranean.

On the evening of July 2, local time in Yemen, Yemeni Houthi spokesman Yahya Saraiya said in a speech that the Houthi armed forces cooperated with the Iraqi militia "Islamic Resistance Organization" to launch a joint military operation against important targets in Haifa, Israel, using missiles to attack the targets.

According to Cailianshe, statistics show that the Yemeni Houthi armed forces launched the largest number of attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in June so far in 2024, which clearly proves once again that the threats facing the global shipping market may be difficult to resolve quickly.

According to data released by the navy operating in the region, there were 16 confirmed attacks on ships in June. This is the month with the most attacks in a single month since 2024. The last time so many ships were attacked was in December last year.
